General Description of Nuevo Vedado

The Nuevo Vedado neighborhood belongs to Plaza de la Revolución municipality and it was settled during the 1930 decade, when the "aristocracy" of Havana were moving from Vedado as a result of their refusal to live with social classes they considered inferior. In the Vedado neighborhood the rich and the poor were living together and it was no longer an "elitist" neighborhood. So, the Nuevo Vedado were settled by the rich people of this epoch to stay away from the poor.

After the 1959 Revolution and due to the massive exodus of most of the millionaires to the United States or to other neighborhoods such as Miramar, Nuevo Vedado was gradually transformed into the neighborhood of the military elite and people from the government and its entire culture was transformed. Nowadays there is a mixture of all these people and even people of different origins joined and the population of Nuevo Vedado is now a mixed population, i.e. there are people with ties to the government, descendants of the millionaires of the 1930s and miscellaneous people.

One thing kept constant during all these years: it's about a neighborhood highly residential, which follows the coast of the Almendares river and the Havana wood. It possesses only one fast avenue, the 26th Avenue. Consequence of this is that Nuevo Vedado is an highly ecologic area, maybe the most clean of Havana City and the least exposed to the sea saltpetre. And, sure, it's still an elite's neighborhood and one of the most preferred place of tourists, who love the peacefullness, the relatively low cost luxury and the contact with nature, five minutes away from the downtown.
